“Do you speak Indian?” As an Indian-American, I was asked this question fairly often growing up. I explained that “Indian” is not a language, and in fact India has 14 main languages, and the language they're likely thinking of is Hindi, the national language. My 16 year old cousin is regularly asked the same question, nearly 20 years later.
